The abandoned machinery series was taken in the summer of '93. While living on the west coast (San Jose, CA) I had spotted this "thing" someone left on the side of the road while returning home from work. It caught my attention as I've never seen anything like it before. It was a flatbed trailer that had a generator in the back, a heating tank in the middle, and a hose reel on the front. It was old and rusted but the uniqueness of it's shape and the textures of the age spoke out "photo op!". Since it was just down the street from my condo I spent the next week photographing the thing at all times of the day trying to capture it in the right light. Of all the images that were taken, the ones done at night were the most unique.

The night images were taken with a long exposure time of up to one minute. While the shutter was open a flashlight with a colored filter was used to "paint" the surface. Some images were painted in single colors and some were done with multiple colors. The image to the left was done with three colors shining on the hose reel. Blue was used to color the inside area of the reel, red was used on the front bracket, and a little bit of orange was used to highlight the perimeter of the reel and parts of the front bracket. The green and yellow glows in the background were from some streetlights in the background.

On a side note, since I was out there quite often taking pictures, the neighbors wondered when I was going to take away "my" machine. On one occasion while doing the night images (at about three in the morning) the police stopped by to see what I was doing. When I explained what I found and what I was doing, they just kind of shook their heads and left. ;-)

Enjoy the pictures!
